Famed singer-songwriter Janis Joplin rose to fame after an appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company. After working with the band for two albums, Janis Joplin left the group to pursue her own solo work.
By 1969, Joplin released her first album with a new backing band, I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!, and performed as part of the Woodstock line-up. In 1970, she began recording her fourth album, Pearl, with the Full Tilt Boogie Band and ended up performing in a double-bill with the Big Brother Band in July 1970. Unfortunately, Joplin passed in October of the same year, due to an overdose of heroin.
